“A valuable collection of readable essays on some of the best known Jewish thinkers and teachers of the modern period. Readers will emerge from this volume with a heightened appreciation for the Jewish mind and some of the men who shaped it.”— Jonathan D. Sarna, Brandeis University

Although Judaism was spared the trauma of sectarianism, schism, and denominational fragmentation that has plagued Christianity and Islam, the last century has witnessed an emergence of several new Jewish religious trends of major significance. Reform Judaism was initiated in Germany around 1839 followed by Conservative and Reconstuctionist Judaism, as well as various Neo-Orthodox and NeoHasidic initiatives, each with its own ideology, congregations, schools, and organizations. The contributions included in this book deal with the emergence of these Jewish religious forms within the past 150 years, with the religious thinkers and teachers who intitiated or influenced them, and the historical events that had an impact upon them.

Among the thinkers and teachers are: Ahad Ha-am, Abraham Isaac Kook, Asher Margaliot, Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, Les Back, Joseph Soloveitchik Abraham Heschel, Mordecai Kaplan, Primo Levi, and Yehuda Amichai.

The late RAPHAEL PATAI is author of numerous books including, On Jewish Folklore, The Hebrew Goddess, The Myth of the Jewish Race, and The Messiah Texts.

EMANUEL GOLDSMITH is professor of Jewish Studies at Queen's College, NY and author of Modern Yiddish Culture and co-editor of Dynamic Judaism: The Essential Writing of Mordecai M. Kaplan.
